The Abstract Series developed out of the Desert Blue Series. I had started experimenting with Medallions, my adaptation of the Murrini technique. Murrini are made from multiple layers of color shaped into a rod and then, after cooling, cut into disks, which exposes the patterns of the cross section. My Medallions start in the same way but instead of cutting them, I shape them into disks while they're hot, which changes the patterns visible after inserting the Medallions into the background colors.
In the Abstract Series, the disks will often look raised and inserted even though I flatten them into the existing mass of glass.
